About Roy Newberry - SAMS #214
Roy Newberry Jr. (SAMS #214), is among the most respected surveyors in the wide circle of the yachting industry today. "Total Involvement" might best describe Roy's marine activities: As a captain, Roy has logged over 450,000 ocean miles on commercial and pleasure crafts, power yachts, and sailboats. Additionally, Roy has been involved in designing, constructing/refitting custom ocean racing sailboats and commercial power vessels and trained as an IOR, IMS, Meter, and ORC vessel measurer and a USYRU judge. Roy served the regional sailboat racing community in every capacity.

Born and raised in Galveston, Texas, Roy is a fourth-generation B.O.I. (Born on the Island). He started sailing at a young age and quickly became a skilled sailor in local racing circuits. By 26, Roy earned his U.S.C.G. 100-Ton Ocean Operator's License and began operating various vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. By 30, he had achieved his 500 Ton Master’s License.

Roy has logged hundreds of thousands of miles at sea, delivering yachts across the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, the Pacific Ocean, the East Coast, and the Great Lakes. In 1982, he founded Newberry Marine Surveying, LLC. The company and has spent over 40 years inspecting yachts and pleasure craft globally. Roy has several racing offshore sailing course records and was commissioned Admiral in the Texas Navy in 1987.
